Practical guide / Fold Signature
How to test booklet page order before printing the whole file
Use an eight-page numbered dummy to separate imposition errors from duplex orientation errors.
Make a small diagnostic file
Create eight pages with large sequential numbers, a visible top arrow and an inside-edge mark. Use inexpensive paper of the intended size. The arrows reveal an upside-down reverse side that page numbers alone might not make obvious.
Check the imposed pairs first
For a left-bound eight-page booklet, the outer sheet contains 8 and 1 on one face, then 2 and 7 on the other. The inner sheet contains 6 and 3, then 4 and 5. Check the software preview against that map before adjusting feed direction.
Test the printer separately
Print the dummy using the software’s booklet workflow. Fold and nest the sheets, then turn every page. If the pairs are correct but one side is upside down, examine duplex orientation. If the reading order is wrong, examine imposition and nesting. Change one setting at a time and mark the successful test.
Keep the successful setup documented
Record printer, driver, paper orientation, duplex setting and the application used. A different printer or PDF viewer can change the workflow. For multiple signatures, repeat the check on the first and last groups so padding and document offsets are visible before a full run.
Put the method to work
See front and back page pairs for one left-bound folded booklet or signature, with blank padding clearly marked.
